Known as a destination for jetsetters and newlyweds, the Maldives (also known as the Maldive Islands), with its picturesque beaches, is the ultimate luxury destination. Located in the Indian Ocean and made up of over 1,000 coral islands, you will not find difficulty in locating the perfect tropical paradise. This is on my bucket list for a very specific reason – uninterrupted relaxation and seclusion. The only thing separating me from a two-week vacay is a huge bonus, a plane ride, and a dhoni fishing boat (which is the typical way to arrive at your chosen resort once you depart the airport).

What Would I Do

With limited sights to see, if I wanted to do anything aside from lying around the beach and sipping my favorite cocktail, this would not be the place for me. With that said, my days would be filled with relaxing beachside, scheduling meals (there are underwater restaurants in the Maldives) and enjoying them extensively, booking several spa treatments and enjoying some alone time.

I have never been a big scuba diver, but with the stunning coral reefs, I would plan for at least one or two outings. The marine life is some of the most abundant in the world and the water is as clear as drinking water. The Maldives is one of the few places where you can swim all year round with whale sharks and dolphins. Fishing is really big in the Maldives as well, and after my recent fishing excursion, I may need to dust off my skills before this trip.

Where Would I Stay

Gili Lankanfushi Maldives was named the winner of the 2014 Travelers’ Choice awards. Formerly known as Soneva Gili by Six Senses, Gili Lankanfushi is set on a private island and is a 20-minute speedboat ride from the airport. I knew this was my resort of choice when I read about their “no shoes” rule. Stuffy resorts are not for me and although their rates are no walk in the park, I appreciate the concept. This eco-resort boasts 45 wooden villas supported by stilts that float seamlessly above the clearwater lagoon. The fully-equipped diving school is a plus and the designated “Mr. (or Ms.) Friday”, a butler assigned to each villa, is there to ensure my vacation is most memorable.

What is on your “travel” bucket list?
