What's the Skinny?
"Oops!...I Did It Again", could be a great opening line for Chef Brandi Key to anyone (naysayers and haters alike) that don't think she is a certified bad ass after opening yet another successful restaurant - Punk’s Simple Southern Food. This time she gets to go back to her roots and share some of the delicious dishes that came out of her grandparent’s southern kitchen. Chef Brandi Key did not just want it to be about her, so the menu is a snapshot of the entire south, with dishes like Grandma Pat’s Crispy Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Pimento Cheese, Shrimp & Grits, and Seafood Po-Boys. In addition to the food, the restaurant and décor are all staged to evoke a southern rustic feel; while still having a fun, family friendly vibe. We personally can’t wait to sit on the back porch with a big group of family and friends and try out the entire menu.
And just in time for summer they have finally debuted the Biscuit Bar! No need to grab your glasses or hit the refresh button, you read that correctly a BISCUIT BAR!! The biscuit recipe comes from Chef Brandi's Grandpa Doc. At the biscuit bar, you can choose from four different biscuits, and feel free to mix & match: Ham & Jam Biscuit stuffed with griddled ham steak and seasonal housemade jam, Chicken Fry Biscuit stuffed with a crispy chicken tender, Punk’s sauce and dill pickles, Crawdads Biscuit covered with etouffee sauce, and a Gravy Train Biscuit smothered with Andouille cream gravy. Additionally, Punk’s has rolled out their new brunch menu, and a good amount of new items for the summer which are included on the "Summer Fare" section.
What Did We Love?
Sweet Corn Hushpuppies (served with b&b pickled tartar sauce) - They are like Lay's Potato Chips...there is NO way you could eat just one. We had to push these babies to the very edge of the table to keep from going overboard! You can even see the kernels of sweet corn bursting through the delicate yet crispy exterior. If you grew up eating those greasy flavorless cornbread balls, then it's time for an upgrade.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken (served with mashed potatoes and gravy, buttermilk biscuits, and Punk's sauce) - Grandma Pat is the mastermind behind this family recipe. This platter of chicken can be yours whether you opt for the whole (great for sharing) or the half chicken. The recipe gets to the heart of what is required to make a good piece of fried goodness - which is a lot more difficult than one would imagine. The most important factor is the seasoning, the second is the brine, and the third is the crispy skin. Punk's gets all three right which results in the perfect piece of crispy, tender and juicy bird.
Pineapple Upside Cake - There are really no words to describe this dessert. It catches you completely off guard when you take your first bite and can actually taste the butter! Enough said.
