It’s Bridal Extravaganza time in our fine city, and here at Urban Swank we are doing our part to make sure the brides-to-be and their advisory team are in the know about the wedding trends for 2014. This way you can walk in with a plan of attack or at the very least a few ideas to get your wedding planning on the way!

Did you know that Houston was the 14th most expensive city to get married in? It shouldn’t be much of a shocker considering we are the 4th largest city and with the growing popularity of more personalized and posh weddings, Houston brides are grooms are willing to fork over $28,000 on average for their special day. For 2014, weddings have certainly returned to being more focused on the details. Wedding trends are typically taken from fashion trends the year before and in 2014 brides and grooms are sparing no expense. We got a chance to sit down with wedding planner extraordinaire, Shaun Gray of Gray & Associates Events (one of the top 5 wedding planners in Houston) in our own “made just for Urban Swank” wedding trends event. During our special evening that was complete with food, cake, cocktails, lighting, and florals, we discussed this year’s trends – what is hot and definitely what is not.

Themes

In regards to what is “hot”, one of the big wedding themes is the “Woodland Wedding”. It combines rustic and glam and includes decor like fabulous centerpieces that blend branches with flowers and sequin (and anything that sparkles). How about adding a flower crown for your flower girl made from branches and small girly flowers? Your wedding options are endless. A lot goes into planning a wedding and in the end, as Shaun Gray states, just remember to “fully commit to your theme.”

Fashion

Since radiant orchid is the Pantone color of the year, we are not surprised that bright colors are back. Ladies and gents, light pastels have taken a back seat to darker, more vibrant shades. Don’t be afraid to go with bold colors whether you are choosing your bridemaids dresses, flowers, or decor. And since we are talking fashion, let your bridemaids display their own style…within reason of course. Wearing the same color, with the mismatched trend, your bridemaids can look stunning in a style of dress that fits their shape.

Food

Other trends focus on the dinner and the cocktails where the bride and groom are bringing back nostalgic items like grilled cheese sandwiches. Signature cocktails are being paired with beer and wine too to add a spin to the typical open bar concept and it’s better for the budget as well. The focus on farm to table and supporting local and sustainable ingredients is also gaining momentum and brides and grooms are carrying their way of life into their wedding day. Chef Darius King of the Holiday Inn in the Energy Corridor presented several dining options during our evening that can be elegant and tasty without breaking the bank, like the typically forgotten pork chop.

Entertainment

Photo booths, which were sought after last year, have not lost their popularity. Aside from the party that follows the after party (oh yes, guests are pulling all-nighters with the bride and groom), slow motion booths are becoming just as popular. They increase guest interaction and are just downright fun. In addition, the bride and groom are personally selecting yard games like Bocce, horseshoes, ring toss, etc. to keep the party going.
