August is typically the signal of all things back to school. Buses are running on regular rotation, back to school supplies are dropped in every store, and there are sales on clothing, shoes and everything else growing kids need. However, this doesn’t have to be a time for just the kids to learn. Now that the children have settled into a routine (and parents too!), it might be time to look into taking a class for yourself.
Houston has some great adult-friendly and creative classes that can shake up your list of hobbies and expand your special set of skills. Between art, cooking, fitness, and a list of unusual classes, there is a place for everyone to learn something new.

Cake Decorating Class
Decorating cakes have become one of the fastest growing industries and every time I see a gorgeous cake I want to give it a try. Practice is one required element of a great looking cake, and this shop offers courses broken down into individual skills so that the students can master one thing at a time. For the focused individual, they offer private lessons and for those who are just getting started, basic baking courses. The best part – most of the supplies are included in the class fee!
Various restaurants also offer cooking classes. Sign up to learn from some of your favorite local chefs and learn to cook some of their specialties straight from the chef! These are great for date night, girls night out, or a person who just wants to get more involved with their favorite cuisine. A few favorites are: Pondicheri (Indian), Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen (Mexican) and Quattro (Italian).
Fun fact about summer: it is easy to gain weight. Between the barbecues, birthday parties, rooftop drinks, and happy hours, it is a no-brainer that the time between August through the holidays some people fall off of their fitness routine.
