The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) swept into Houston last week. Lasting for five days, the conference included not only some of the top historically black colleges and universities, but hosted several events, seminars and even parties. The week kicked off with the quarterfinals and progressed on to the semifinals on Friday. On Saturday, two of Houston’s very own went head to head in a battle for the title.
In the men’s championship game, Texas Southern University (TSU) secured their victory over Prairie View A&M (78-73). Their first victory since 2003, this was the fifth NCAA tournament win in TSU’s history and Prairie View A&M’s second straight season losing in the championship game. However, the ladies of Prairie View A&M, last year’s champions, represented for the university and took home the title. Going against TSU, Prairie View A&M picked up their fourth consecutive championship win (63-58). This is the first time in history that the TSU women have made their way to the SWAC basketball championships. Congrats to both teams!
Although the games had you up in your seats, the post game concerts were destined to be a hit. We got the opportunity to take it back to the “old school” with a two-part concert featuring Sisters With Voices (SWV) and Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD).
Taking place courtside, we were up close and personal with two of the top R&B groups of the 90’s. Singing along to our favorite jams like “Weak” and “Posion” it was truly a memorable experience.
Urban Swank did receive media passes, but the opinions expressed are our own.
