We take a lot for granted. Simple, everyday necessities are often overlooked because we expect for them to be readily available. But what if that wasn’t your reality? Did you know that 1.5 billion people in developing communities live without electricity? That number is astonishing.
Developing communities around the world are living everyday with no access to light once the sun goes down. And if they do have access to light in their homes (businesses or health facilities), they are being lit using kerosene. Not only is this an expensive alternative, but it is not safe and honestly very toxic. If ingested or inhaled, kerosene can cause serious illnesses and can even be fatal.
So what is being done about it?
Direct Energy has recently partnered with MPOWERD™ to bring their solar-powered Luci light to developing communities across the globe via their Give Brighter Plan, which includes a self-powered Luci light. The Luci Light is an inflatable solar-powered lantern, flashlight, and emergency light all in one. It is extremely lightweight and charges in 8 hours of direct sunlight, which can shine for up to 12 hours on a single charge. They were created to provide a safe, efficient way for families and businesses to never again have to live (or work) in darkness, and with Direct Energy help over 10,000 lights has been distributed to date.
How can you help?
When you sign up for Direct Energy’s Give Brighter 12 plan, MPOWERD will send one Luci light to a developing part of the world that struggles from the lack of electricity. In addition, you would also receive your very own Luci light.
So you’re probably thinking, “how could I use my new Luci light?” As bloggers who have a need and great appreciation for light, we wanted to share a few creative ways we found to use the Luci light:
Pictures are our life and light is life support! So with the Luci light we see ourselves using it as a filter. For example, some days we find ourselves needing extra light in a dimly lit restaurant or bar, and using the flash on our phones or camera is not an option (mainly because the pictures come out overexposed). Usually we will get someone to turn the light on from their phone and use a napkin to diffuse the light and create a soft light filter. Now with our Luci we have our own soft light that we can make bright or kick up the brightness by changing the mode.
Another way we found it to be quite useful was for taking for selfies. Yes we are those girls and we took the Luci for a round of selfies that would make even Kim Kardashian, the queen of selfies, jealous.
Lastly, and for all those people who are road warriors (drives a lot for work) like Swanky Girl, it can be left in your car for emergencies. Think of those times when you are on the road and need a flashlight, or even worse when you are broke down or need assistance, it can be a distress light.
