Shaken, stirred, and a really great Beatles tribute band, the Houston Margarita Festival brought out all the big guns. After a slight delay thanks to good ol’ Houston weather unpredictability, the festival pulled it together for a sunny day of margarita loving fun on Sunday, November 8th. Margarita machines lined the beautiful Sam Houston Park, with a myriad of flavors both classic and completely unexpected.

Thousands of Houstonians came equipped with lawn chairs, blankets, and committed for the long haul. The festival ran from 12pm-10pm, and that gave plenty of time to get one’s drink on (take a nap, and recharge for that second wind). Festival goers basked on the Sam Houston Park lawns in the shadow of the city’s iconic skyline. With margarita- or better yet, margaritas, in hand, folks enjoyed live music from two stages. From salsa to classic rock favorites, there was something for everyone. My favorite was the Fab 5, a Beatles tribute band, who have been Houston Press’s Best Cover/Tribute Band reigning champs since 2011 – and rightly so! Maybe it was the margaritas talking, but it was hard to believe that they weren’t just an actual reincarnation of the British greats.

Among the comforting purrs of the margarita machines, there were also the dulcet tones of mixologists shaking away. This was the inaugural year for the Best Margarita Competition. Local favorites, Soto’s Cantina, Diablo Loco, and Cadillac Bar, competed to see who had the best classic ‘rita. Diablo Loco won the crowd over, and brought home the trophy! In addition to the classic shaken option, patrons had the option of countless varieties of frozen choices like grape, apple, peach mango… and pumpkin spice. Yes, you read that right, pumpkin spice.

Live music, local vendors, all the funnel cake you could ever want, and endless margaritas, the Houston Margarita Festival did it again. It was a Sunday funday indeed, but unfortunately, there’s not enough tequila in the world to make that Pumpkin Spice ‘Rita not taste like I’m eating a Yankee Candle.

Salud!
