Sugar Land, although a bit out of the way from some, is only a hop, skip and a jump away from my hood. It has therefore become my go to destination for late night eats and casual evenings when a drive into the city seems daunting. Aside from the spots that reside within the boundaries of Sugar Land Town Square, where a majority of the better eateries are located in my opinion, you’ll find a few worthy of the extra mileage if you choose to venture out a little further.

Chicken and Sausage Gumbo

And here enters Sweetwater Seafood which is located in the old Just Mac location. Still a newbie to the Sugar Land arena, and without much competition, it was a much needed addition to the area.

Boudin Eggrolls

A visit to Sweetwater Seafood will be a relaxed one – with a neighborhood vibe, friendly service, and nothing remotely fancy. It’s a seafood shop offering a blend of cuisines including Vietnamese, Cajun, and a plethora of boiled seafood options ranging from the popular crawfish, deliciously sweet snow crab and even blue crab.

Shrimp Fritters

The fried seafood is good across the board – the thinly sliced catfish, oyster nachos, shrimp fritters, and the po-boys (one of their top sellers during lunch) are all solid. And regardless if your preference is snow crab or crawfish you’ll be at a loss if you don’t opt for their signature Sweetwater Sauce that when dumped on your entree brings flavors of butter, Cajun spices and citrus to the forefront. Just don’t go play Mr. Tough Guy and think you can take down the “extra hot” version. Just stick to “medium” or “hot” and save your pride.

Crawfish Etouffee

Although their Cajun (not Creole) version of gumbo and crawfish etouffee were just okay, I would pass on those and head elsewhere to get your fix. With my family roots embedded in Cajun and Creole cuisines via marriage, I am a little hard to please. I didn’t enjoy the corn in the crawfish etouffee and the gumbo could have had a bit more flavor. But the menu is full of options that will fill your calendar for weeks on end, so you’re not really missing anything by passing on a few items.

Sweetwater Seafood has a return customer in me, and I can’t’ wait to sample their pho (crawfish and seafood pho with a beef broth.) as soon as this hot weather makes way for cooler temperatures.
