There are a ton of sayings that I am sure all of us have grown up hearing from our parents and elders. They would be used at the most opportune times, like when you’ve just gotten reprimanded or when a lesson is to be learned and you are the student. My childhood was filled with “You’re never too old to learn”, or “The older you get, the wiser you become”, and my personal favorite, “Just like a fine wine, you only get better with time”; they all describe growing older as something to aspire and look forward to. In regards to Skeeter’s Mesquite GrillI found this quote to be most fitting, “Experience is the best teacher.”

The Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill family of restaurants (with a total of six locations) has been offering family friendly dining for over 25 years. What started out as a neighborhood burger joint, has now become a go to place for families to enjoy a wide range of offerings at very family friendly prices. The way it started is the way it has remained and that is exactly the way owners Betsy and Gary Adair would like to keep it. The Adair’s have seen the restaurant business take on many forms over the last few decades. From the times when “big name” restaurants received the highest acclaim, to the days when chain restaurants took over, and to the present day of the chef driven restaurant…Skeeter’s has never ventured into any other territory or followed any trend.

I guess sometimes it is good to “leave well enough alone” and “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it” (had to throw a few more sayings in…it just seemed appropriate). I for one can appreciate the simplicity of Skeeter’s Grill. My first time visiting was during a media dinner where Betsy and Gary Adair were kicking off their 25 year anniversary. I sampled the anniversary cheeseburger, which was juicy, packed full of flavor, and the cheese was laid on thick. The burgers are still their number one seller, but their tacos are worth a mention. The fish tacos were delightful and the freshly cut chunks of avocado were a great finish. The menu is rounded out with goodies such as catfish and I spotted several salads that would be options during my next visit. It is pretty much a hodgepodge (in a good way) of all the great stuff us Houstonians love to eat; including their $3 frozen margaritas.

Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill will be celebrating their longevity the entire month of April. During this time, they will also be donating $1 from the sale of The Skeeter’s Anniversary Burger, Fries and Drink Combo Meal to the Houston Area Little League Challenger Division. To be quite honest, 25 years is a hell of a long time when it comes to anything. If a 25 year marriage deserves an award and praise (in my book), then a 25 year old restaurant deserves at least a visit…or two. They are definitely doing something right.
