On what I thought would just be a non-productive, why did I even bother leaving the house kind of day; I got a glimmer of hope. I will even be cheesy and say “I got sunshine on a cloudy day…when it’s cold outside, I’ve got…”blah, blah, blah – you know the rest of the song. Now stay with me and my “cheesy” song references throughout this post because they totally fit! That sunshine came from Resie’s Chicken & Waffles Restaurant. If you are a southern cuisine lover or have a thing for Chicken & Waffles you’ve probably heard of this new Houston spot. I figured this day was as good as any to check it out since I was in the area, and as I said before was having one of those days.

Resie’s had a pleasant and familiar ambiance that left me feeling as if I were visiting a friends place for lunch. The walls were lined with old album covers and old records; if you are under the age of 25 please do a Goggle search to see what an old record even looks like. This same theme was used for the dining tables as well. Now do you get the “cheesy” song references? You guys know I live for random foolishness, so just go with it. After standing for a few seconds and taking in my new found lunch digs, I was greeted by a warm smiling face welcoming me to Resie’s (insert the most southern voice your mind can conjure up just for the fun of it). I was then asked if it was my first time; I replied “yes”. She quickly responded very confidently with, “Well great! Get ready, you’re in for some outstanding food.” Oh, Happy Day … is what my taste buds wanted to scream as they did the happy dance.  I can’t remember the last time my waiter/waitress displayed that level of confidence in a meal that I had yet to order; that is always a good sign.

Instead of going with the signature Chicken & Waffles; I decided to switch things up and go with a southern classic or should I say southern classics: Smothered Wings w/Gravy and Rice, Collard Greens, Mac N’ Cheese, Yams, and Hot Water Cornbread. This is known as the Bo-Diddly Combo on the menu. I will not claim this was the most visually aesthetic meal I’ve ever had; I mean it’s hard to make brown gravy look like anything more than brown gravy! However, what they missed in aesthetic beauty they made up for in taste. This was the real deal folks and the entire meal was delicious. The Collard Greens were among the best I’ve ever tasted, and the Smothered Wings were falling off the bones.  Now I quickly thought of which Bo-Diddly song would fit my meal. I came up with…”You Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover”.

Second Visit 7 days later…

Since I opted not to have the Chicken & Waffles on my first visit, I went back a few days later to try this signature dish. Now before I get into the meal, let me share a few Chicken & Waffles fun facts…

• I heart Chicken & Waffles is a FACT.
• Wells Restaurant in Harlem, NY has been serving Chicken & Waffles since 1938.
• The famous Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles credits Wells for bringing this culinary delight to the masses; but Roscoe’s is credited for making it as popular as it is today.
• Resie’s serves traditional waffles all-day every day, and they also have a waffle of the day. Buttered Pecan and Pound Cake was the waffle of the day when I visited.

I know you are all waiting and saying, Swanky Girl “Tell Me Something Good”. Not only was my meal slap ya momma good; their attention to detail blew me away! The waffles were baked to perfection; I like them a little crisp on the outside and mildly fluffy on the inside. The chicken was good; however I like lots of seasoning on my chicken so I will request extra seasoning next time. Many establishments that serve Chicken & Waffles will add powdered sugar and fresh fruit to the plate for a little more detail. Well, Resie’s takes it a few steps beyond with warm maple syrup and MELTED BUTTER. This small little thing is a complete game changer in my opinion; do you know how many times I’ve had a cold lump of butter served with my waffles? So, they get two thumbs-up for the delicious combo and the melted butter.

After this wonderful meal, I had to meet the owner and tell her how good everything was with my food and service. During our meeting she informed me that they will be opening a second location at the beginning of the year. This second location is more of a sports bar, but they will serve the same great food. Can you say Monday Night  Football, Cocktails, and Chicken & Waffles…SCORE!
