The On The Rocks Bartender Challenge was held Thursday, April 25th at the Post Oak Grill in Sugarland. Some of Houston’s best bartenders were competing for a cash prize of $1,000 and, of course, a shot at this year’s title, “Official Cocktail of the 10th Annual Sugar Land Wine & Food Affair.”
The bartenders presented their creations one at a time, while the other four served up their Sailor Jerry Rum cocktail entries for the crowd. As their turn came, each bartender walked the judges through their cocktail, step by step, all while the clock was counting down. They only had 6 minutes to make five full cocktails, fancy garnish and all. Hey, it was a competition, right?
The contestants (and their respective cocktails) were Kehlen Selph of Coppa Ristorante (Kilauea Smoke), Sheridan Fay of El Gran Malo and Haven (The Punchbowl Crater), Luis Villegas of Reef Houston (Jerry’s Tikki Punch), Hal Brock of Anvil Bar & Refuge (The Shores of Kilauea), and Chedda Slokar of Goro & Gun and Stags Head Pub (Jolly Roger). The judges for the evening were David Alan, freelance bartender and author of the Tipsy Texan; Katherine Whaley, KHOU 11 News; Nick Babcock, Houston Mixologist for Republic National Distributing Company; Jacob Detten, Sailor Jerry Brand Ambassador; and Alba Huerta, co-owner Julep (coming 2013).
When it was all said and done, Kehlen Selph of Coppa Ristorante came away with the win!
