Urban Swank’s weekdays are usually kind of busy because there are lots of events that happen during the week. As a result, when the weekend comes around we are usually tired and just want to relax. And then sometimes we are just on GO, and for 14-28 days we are everywhere. That is exactly what happened a few weeks back when we had a crazy few weeks and decided we wanted to have a day of fun, which led us to CityCentre on a Saturday afternoon for lunch at The General Public and bowling at Bowl and Barrel; both of which just recently opened.

What’s super cool about these spots is they are right next door to each other – we actually cut through a secret door and went from lunch straight in the bowling alley (shhh…don’t tell since we kinda cheated).

Tamale Pie

We started out our afternoon at The General Public, which is an upscale farm to table concept with a relaxed neighborhood feel! The menu is loaded with modern and classic American dishes like crab hushpuppies, tamale pie, honey fried chicken, and shrimp & avocado salad just to name a few. However, our menu faves were a few classics that they gave an interesting twist….

Quail & Hot Cakes

Instead of the chicken & waffles, they offer Quail & Hot Cakes (chickpea crusted quail, scallion pancakes, & chipotle syrup) – we were so excited about this dish, and it did not let us down! The sweet, spicy, and savory flavor profile of the scallion pancakes with the chipotle syrup works well. We just felt the dish needed more syrup (it came out lightly drizzled).

Green Chile Grilled Cheese w/French Fries

Instead of a plain grilled cheese sandwich, they offer a Green Chile Grilled Cheese (jalapeño bread, Muenster cheese, American cheese, and green Chile gravy) – Ummm did you just read the ingredients?!?! This grilled cheese made me so damn happy. It was creamy and gooey in the right way. The jalapeño bread is the thing that makes it stand up and demand attention!

Signature Cocktail served on customized coasters

And yes their cocktails were pretty good as well. Even though the ones we selected were a little sweet for me, Urban Girl thoroughly enjoyed them and said my taste buds were off that day because they were fine (see we don’t always agree)…LOL! Additionally, they offer an excellent whiskey selection along with beer and wine.

Vintage bag and bowling pin inside Bowl & Barrel

Next, it was time for a little bowling at Bowl & Barrel. I was so pumped about this place because I’d heard good things from people that actually bowl for sport; no shade to recreational bowlers intended. They reported that beyond the fantastic ambiance and experience of the place, the lanes were super nice and well maintained; which made me happy since I love bowling!

Bowl & Barrel can best be described as a high-end boutique style bowling alley. It offers an elevated bowling experience with state of the art lanes and an automated check-in and bowling process. The food is also more upscale, along with an outstanding beer program!

We absolutely love this place and can’t wait to go back for more bowling, to sip on beers, and snack on their delicious giant pretzels! Do yourself a favor and get a pretzel.

Looks like a strike Urban Girl

I think we will visit sooner than later since we have to break our tie; Urban Girl took one game, and I took one game. They recently started Vinyl Nights on Sundays, which features a live DJ spinning tunes and half price bowling and beer. Who’s down for dinner and some bowling with the Urban Swank girls?
