We Houstonians are lovers of Tex-Mex. Is there anything more fulfilling than enjoying a pile high of fajitas, generously filled tacos or a plate of enchiladas hidden under a lovely layer of chile con carne? What if we told you that you could experience “elevated” Tex-Mex fare? Well, the folks at Anejo and Executive Chef Alberto Gutierrez are taking what we know and love and combing that with more traditional and authentic recipes. And their massive offering of tequilas and mezcals complete the deal.

As far as the ambiance, Anejo is truly a stunning place. A red and black color scheme, red leather chairs and booths, white tablecloths, and magnificent chandeliers boasts a steakhouse vibe that makes you feel as though you have to put on your Sunday’s best to visit. On the contrary, Anejo is the perfect place to kick off a Friday night with friends, grab your best gals for Sunday brunch on the patio, or spend an evening tasting some very rare and hand-picked tequilas as the very knowledgeable bartenders share the stories behind the brands.

So, if you like Tex-Mex that is a little more rooted in traditional Mexican food, Anejo’s Houston Restaurant Weeks menu is a must! There were so many standouts from our tasting, it was definitely hard to pick our favorites. However that is a part of the fun, so here are a few faves from their HRW menu:

Specialty cocktails have been created to enhance your HRW meal. We give them two-thumbs up for adding not one or two, but four different cocktails to choose from as well! We highly recommend the Rita Rojo which is 100% agave tequila infused with strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry, citronge liquor, fresh lime juice and honey water. Think refreshing and boozy.

Fried Lengua Taco (lengua, guacamole, pickled onions, smoked habanero salsa, choice of corn or flour tortilla) – That smoked habanero salsa adds just the right about of smokiness to the mix. The lengua is very tender and all the ingredients play very well together, which are exactly what you want from a taco.

Anejo Sizzling Fajita (chicken and beef, served with choice of rice and beans, cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, house-made tortillas) – We know you all are thinking, “did they just put fajitas on this list”?!?! Trust us on this one, especially if you are a fajita lover! An added bonus here is that the tortillas are freshly made when you place your order.
