For one day, and one day only, I had my fill of sweets. Chocolate, ice cream, cakes, cupcakes, you name it, I probably had a taste – or two. So what was the occasion? Aside from the fact that I had been craving desserts all week, it was family day, and the agenda was an easy sell. When mom mentions desserts, no one, including my husband, ever declines. Not only do these “sweet” spots not disappoint, but they are worthy of a visit on your cheat day and really any day.
The first stop on this Sunday afternoon was Happy Fatz. Known for their unique take on hot dogs (go for the Texas Chili topped with Fritos or The Clucker that gets its love by way of hash browns, bacon, grilled onions, a fried egg, and special sauce), they are equally popular for the homemade cheesecakes and cakes. I fell hard for the Italian Cream Cake I enjoyed many moons ago and have been a die-hard fan ever since. The options change frequently, but you’ll be happy with whatever you choose. On this day, chocolate was calling my name.
For Ice Cream
Not far from Happy Fatz sits small batch ice cream parlor, Fat Cat Creamery. They source their ingredients locally and feature ice cream in just about any way you want to take it. A single scoop in a cup, a double scoop in a cone, and a strawberry milkshake were on our menus that day. They carry five daily flavors all the time (Cat’s Meow Mexican Vanilla, Milk Chocolate Stout, Waterloo Strawberry Buttermilk, Amaya Coffee & Cream, and Chai Tea Coconut) and throw in a few daily flavors for good measure. If the Buttered Rum Raisin or Whiskey Butter Pecan happen to be on the menu when you go, order them and thank me later.
I knew we would be headed to Red Dessert Dive so I opted to get my cheesecake fix from there. Red Dessert Dive is another small bakery who supports local and makes some really fantastic treats. Although their cakes are some of the best in town, don’t sleep on the other goodies. The Turtle Cheesecake is aww-mazing, their signature Debusker™ (a delicious marriage of a Dark Chocolate Valrhona Brownie and an M&M Cookie) is something we wanted as kids, but our parents wouldn’t make, and the Fat Elvis cake (a Banana Chocolate Chip Cake with a Peanut Butter Buttercream) is heaven sent. And these are just a few of my faves. I literally stalk their Instagram for the cake of the day. Hey, I’m just super loyal. 🙂
Honorable mention and pictured above – the Birthday Cake from The General Public.
