What’s The Skinny?
Once upon a time in Houston, Texas there was just a little restaurant called Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar that thought it could serve amazing oysters and fresh quality local products in a casual, laid-back dining space; and boy were they right because people loved the place! Fast forward several years, they wanted something a little less casual and much larger to showcase more of their culinary swag and to give oysters a new showplace, so they introduced Liberty Kitchen and Oysterette. The menu still offers a little something for everyone, but with a huge focus on local and regional seafood dishes. So what happens when those two concepts hook up and have a baby? Well, of course, you get a pretty baby with great genes, and its name is Little Liberty! It’s a more hip and cooler dining experience. Let’s start with the fact that you can get breakfast every day. We visited on the weekend and decided to do breakfast and a little lunch, and we were quite impressed (see our favorites below). They also serve dinner with much larger portions and heavier offerings. This new Liberty is a fast casual concept with lighter options making it a great addition to the Liberty Kitchen family!
What Did We Love?
The menu definitely brings several new items to the table (like house-made Greek yogurt that varies from plain to the tempting Pineapple-Ginger Marmalade and Sea Salt) and although a few items are borrowed from the original establishment (ie. the gumbo), Little Liberty is claiming a spot of its own. Here are a few faves we highly recommend:
Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Omelet: Move over cheddar…cream cheese has arrived! While this isn’t the first time smoked salmon has been deliciously paired with cream cheese, it doesn’t negate the excitement we felt after ordering this dish. The creamy texture of the omelet is an ideal fit for the flaky salmon and makes it just perfect for brunch. If you are a fan of bagel and lox, this will prove to be just as delightful – minus the extra carbs!
Hawaiian Poke: With a choice of tuna, salmon, veggies, or ‘combo brah’ (which is Little Liberty speak for “you can choose two”), the poke was hands down our favorite dish during our visit. The delicate tuna was mild and fresh and transformed itself into a fairly hearty meal when layered on top of warm rice (kale or cucumber are also options). The addition of tamari (soy sauce) and foodland pupukea style mayo provided the salt and spice. However, the add-ins sealed the deal. Folding in mango, fresh jalapeno, and avocado (a buck a pop if you fancy), we immediately became bushy tailed and bright eyed.
Carnita’s BLT: Served with Russian dressing, egg, arugula and fries, with this baby there is no need to choose between bacon and pork belly because you can have both! This is a pork lover’s happy place. Now this was a special of the day, but the Sandwich with Fried Egg is always on the menu. Whether you opt for a daily special or stick with the basics, you’ll be very pleased.
