Our new category, called “The Outer Loop”, is where we will give you the scoop on some great eateries that are located outside the confines of 610. Us non-city dwellers want a great pizza too and we don’t want to be forced to choose between delivery or Digiorno! I remember those times when I thought my only option for pizza “outside of the loop” was the old tried and true Papa John’s. Not to put those traditional “pizza delivery” companies on blast, but there are wayyy better alternatives. You no longer need to drive 20 minutes to the nearest pizza joint to satisfy those Friday night cravings that turn into a late night run for a fresh 16-inch pie from Pink’s Pizza (shameless plug for one on my personal faves).
First up on our list is Pizaro’s Pizza…
When I found out about Pizaro’s, which is located on 14028 Memorial Drive, and only a hop, skip and a jump from my neighborhood, I was excited (but admittedly a bit hesitant). My passion for this cheesy sensation comes from my time spent in both Chicago and New York City. Through my experiences and development of a life long craving for a tasty pie, I came up with what I will call my perfect pizza. It is not as thick and deep as a Chicago style pizza and not as thin as a New York style pizza, but it does have the same chewiness and texture of those found on the East Coast. And let’s not forget the two most important things…a mildly sweet pizza sauce and a ton of freakin’ cheese!
Salsiccia e Funghi
Tomato sauce, roasted crimini mushrooms, sausage, and mozzarella
Just to be frank, Pizaro’s wouldn’t really fall into my favorite “type” of pizza. However, this pizza is very, very good. The crust is thinner and more reminiscent of Italian style pizza. The real wood burning brick oven lends to the crispiness of the crust and the freshly cut mozzarella (made in house daily) comes as close to authentic as one can get. My only ask, and taken from a true lover of cheese, is to add about 10 more of those little mozzarella squares! I would even be willing to pay a bit more. For me, the cheese makes the pizza, and no matter how great it is, I will leave the table yearning for a pie that gives me what I want…a chewy crust and a ton of freakin’ cheese!
Tomato sauce, spicy sopressata, pepperoni, and mozzarella and basil
With so many types of pizza available, you too will find one that fits the bill. So, if you are in the Memorial area or looking for a great Italian style pizza outside the loop, I would highly recommend Pizaro’s. The atmosphere is relaxing and you can bring your own bottle of wine; yes, it is a BYOB and they do not have a cork fee! That says a lot for this establishment who clearly takes pride in creating an authentic pizza and a great experience. Unlike a Papa John’s or Domino’s, you will mostly likely not come across a Pizaro’s coupon in the Sunday newspaper. With that said, these pizzas are not inexpensive, but you do pay for what you get and a Pizaro’s pizza is worth every penny. Enjoy!
