We can always count on RA Sushi to keep things exciting and tasty. Ever since they rolled on the scene (no pun intended) Houstonians cannot get enough of their sushi and cocktails. On any night of the week you will be hard-pressed to find a table at either the CityCentre or Highland Village location after 6 p.m. The great combination of fun, food, and cocktails keeps us coming and asking for more; which Chef Tai Obata is happy to deliver! Every year they change their menu to keep things fresh and current. A few weeks ago we attended a media tasting of the new menu items and cocktail additions at their Highland Village location.
New Menu Items
The Holy Shishito Chicken – Asian breaded chicken lightly fried and sautéed in a chili sesame sauce, tossed with fried shishito peppers, onions, and green and red peppers
Crispy Asian Tacos – Includes five different flavors (served in rice paper shells): Spicy Tuna, Chicken, Spicy Salmon, “RA”ckin’ Shrimp, and Crispy White Fish
Drunken Clams or Mussels – Steamed in sake and sautéed in garlic and seasoned soy sauce
Bonfire Shrimp – Asian breaded shrimp, lightly fried and tossed in a chili sauce with fried shishito peppers
Salmon with Green Beans – Grilled salmon on top of garlic green beans, drizzled with a spicy yuzu sauce
Asian Chicken Wings – Includes three flavor options: Sesame Garlic, Black Pepper Teriyaki, and Chili Ponzu
Clam Udon – Sake steamed clams served over udon noodles in a sake cream broth
Edamame Dip – Creamy edamame and spinach dip, served warm with wonton chips
We were clear fans of the Asian Chicken Wings and the three flavors provided the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and spicy. All of the Crispy Asian Tacos offered something different, but the “RA”ckin’ Shrimp really stood out in the pack. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the crunch of the rice paper shell went well with the creamy guacamole. It was filled to the brim with guacamole and we say the more the merrier. The Salmon with green beans proved to be quite the surprise. Salmon can be overcooked very easily, but not here my friends. The yuzu sauce was a nice complement to this dish. But wait one minute…let’s not forget dessert! The Sweet Mochi (ice cream wrapped in sweet rice cake) was wonderful. We sampled the mango flavor but it also comes in strawberry and vanilla.
You know we love a great cocktail, so we were bouncing on our seats when we saw that five new drinks were added to the cocktail menu; three of them are less than 200 calories each. A few favorites were the Strawberry Saketini (Svedka Citron, Nigori sake, strawberry purée and lemon juice). It was very refreshing and the sake was a nice touch. Still on our cucumber kick, we enjoyed the Cucumber Collins (Effen Cucumber vodka, fresh cucumber, lime juice, Monin Sugar Free Sweetener and soda) and the Lycheetini (muddled lychee fruit mixed with Voli Lemon vodka, lychee juice, lemon juice and Monin Sugar Free Sweetener). Both took away the waist line guilt of a traditional cocktail and were very tasty (and refreshing). This way you can have more, right?
RA Sushi could not just stop with these new menu items; they have also joined the Reverse Happy Hour club. Yes, you read that right REVERSE HAPPY HOUR! They already offer amazing happy hour specials (click here to view), but now they will become the late night hotspot. The reverse Happy Hour menu includes more than 35 sushi, appetizer, and tapas selections; plus a variety of beer, wine, and cocktails.
