Starting on Thursday afternoons, I usually find myself getting into a weekend state of mind! What that brings up are thoughts about what will I be doing, where will I be hanging out, and what are my weekend dining plans?!? If you are like me the dining part is a huge deal and the weekend means I’ll get to do a little more of it with family and friends. Recently, I took things I step further and added enjoying Sunday supper into the mix. Since the inception of Sunday Supper at State of Grace Restaurant in River Oaks, I’ve been trying to get there. For me, some of my best memories with family and friends come from around the table! It is also that same idea that this Sunday Supper concept was born. For owner Ford Fry this is a “tribute to Houston and his childhood in Texas where many memories were made around the table,” said State of Grace Executive Chef Bobby Matos. “Similarly, my upbringing in California centered around my grandmother’s kitchen sharing delicious meals as a family. With Sunday Supper, we hope to recreate this special experience for our guests, and provide a setting for quality family time at the end of the week.”
The Sunday Supper menu replaces the normal dinner menu on Sundays, which encourages family-style communal dining reminiscent of small town cafes in Texas. It also gives the restaurant a much more casual laidback vibe. I would recommend the more, the merrier, so you all can taste more of the fabulous menu items- dishes like fried catfish, collard greens, oyster stew, chicken fried steak, rice dressing. However, if you are a party of only one or two you will not be disappointed. It’ll just take you a while longer to decide which fabulous protein and sides you will select! So how it works is, for $29 a person, each guest at the table will choose a meat (protein) and the table together will select three sides. Each table also gets butter biscuits, seasonal jam and shaved country ham, along with a market vegetable salad, and dessert. The dishes rotate and change frequently so they can keep things exciting and seasonal! As I went to look at this weeks menu, it has already changed from what I enjoyed last week! So instead of torturing you with my favorites that aren’t there this week, I’ll give you a few tips and suggestions that will make your experience the absolute BESTEST (yes I made up a word)…
- It appears the Fried Chicken and La Hoffbrau T-Bone Steak make all the menus so do yourself a favor and add these as a meat selection.
- Put your cell phones away and be present in the moment! Take that time to enjoy and engage with one another.
- Treat yourself to one of their delicious cocktails.
- And last but certainly not least – WEAR YOUR STRETCHY PANTS.
