Confession time…I’ve been holding out on you all, and I have not been completely honest! I’ve been dealing with a major addiction for several years! I kinda told you all a little about it last year (as a top 10 dish of 2012), but that mention only really scratched the surface. SIGH…DEEP BREATH…Hi, my name is Felice, and I am addicted to Royers Round Top Cafe – okay there I said it! I will find any reason to jump in my car and make the hour and a half drive to Round Top, Texas. Years ago it was just for the pies, but after a few years in I was finally brave enough to try the food. It had nothing to do with it not looking or smelling good, and everything to do with the fact I did not trust myself with anymore delectableness (yes dammit I made up a word which is allowed under Urban Swank rule #11) from that kitchen.

Royers is a place that is easy to love with all its charm and the home feel, which kicks you in the gut as soon as you pull up to this small town Texas restaurant (Round Top has a population of 91). Plus it is so stinkin’ cute my cheeks hurt from the smile I get on my face when I see it. As you walk up and approach the porch, on most days you’ll see the owner, Bud “The Pieman” Royer, sitting on the porch greeting and chatting it up with guests; which is truly a major part of the experience.

On the inside it looks like a bomb exploded and what was left in the aftermath was this wonderful chaordic place, chaos and order put together (yes I made up a word that’s an Oxymoron this time). Before I start this wonderful walk through the whats and whys of Royers, let me give you newbies a few of their house rules, directly from the restaurant. If you forget they are printed on the menus:

SOME HOUSE RULES….Please Play Nice!

** When it is busy, which is often, please be ready to share a “community table”… lasting friendships are made!
** We’ll seat y’all as soon as your party is complete.
** Please no dancing on the tables unless “Sweet Caroline” happens to come on!!!

They have some of the best pies around – no really they do and a whole lot of folks agree with me. They’ve been featured and covered by all the major networks, magazines, and publications for their fabulous pies. Notice I’ve said “pies” because there are many stand-outs and winners. Bud’’s Chocolate Chip Pie is their claim to fame & what put them on the proverbial map! It is sold 4 to 1 over all other pies. However my two favorites are Texas Trash Pie and Junk Berry Pie (the source of my addiction). The Texas Trash Pie has chocolate chips, pecans, caramel, coconut, graham crackers and pretzels; feel free to have a moment of silence to give your respect to the pie and its creators. The Junk Berry Pie, AKA Crack Berry Pie, is in my opinion the holy grail of all the pies. This one is filled with black berries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches & apples with a sour cream-sugar topping; I refer to it as a lump of heaven.

The pies alone are reason enough to make regular trips to Round Top. But since the food is top-notch you don’t have to stop with the pies; you can stay and have lunch or dinner. If you are so inclined to visit on a Sunday, it would be in your best interest to head out early in the morning to get there for Sunday Fried Chicken Dinner which is only available on Sundays and has been known to sell out within the first hour, the chicken is sold from 12 p.m.-3 p.m. (or until they run out). Another must try when you visit is The Grilled Shrimp BLT – 1/4 pound of grilled shrimp with bacon, lettuce & tomato served with a smoky mesquite mustard on a jalapeno sourdough bun. The smoky mesquite mustard is what provides the extra punch that pulls all the flavors of this sandwich together.

Now that my addiction is out, I’m sure you all can understand why it’s something that I felt guilty about, and knew it was time to come clean. The guilt came from not sharing with you all sooner; after all, you are my peeps! Now that you know, make sure you drop-in on your next road trip or just because you want some pie, and if it’s not too much trouble feel free to bring me a slice back with you.
