Signature smells permeated the air in NRG Center on March 5 as food vendors brought their best dishes to compete in the 2015 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Gold Buckle Foodie Awards.

Local radio personalities and other celebrities sat around with utensils in hand as they mentally prepared to judge the mouthwatering foods. Entries ranged from fried foods and breakfast dishes to most creative and foods-on-a-stick.

“The contest is a blast every year,” said Elgia Florianic of CultureMap Houston and one of this year’s judges. “Classic Fair Food is the most fun, and I look forward to it every year.”

New and veteran vendors alike were filled with excitement as they awaited results. Kimberly Revis, owner of Custom Confections, took home first place for Classic Fried Food with her fried brownie ball.

“The Gold Buckle Foodie Awards is my favorite part of the Rodeo,” Revis said. “I get nervous like a girl waiting to be asked to prom.”

Along with bragging rights, category winners took home a plaque, ribbon and $100 Rodeo gift certificate.

Best Breakfast Food: Texas Skillet — Breakfast Cowboy Burrito

Best Value Food: Stubby’s Cinnamon Rolls — “The Original”

Best Food-on-a-Stick: Holmes Smokehouse — bacon wrapped sausage-on-a-stick

Best Fried Food: Custom Confections — fried brownie ball

Classic Fair Food: Holmes Smokehouse — gourmet ½ lb. Texas burger

Most Creative Food: Belgian Waffles — fried Sriracha balls

Best New Flavor: Holmes Smokehouse — baked potato with meat

Best Dessert: Stubby’s Cinnamon Rolls — “The Works”

Show visitors are encouraged to taste all the 2015 Gold Buckle Foodie Award foods by participating in the “I Ate All Eight” challenge. Prizes include buttons, koozies and t-shirts. Punch cards are available in the Commercial Exhibits Committee office and prizes can be redeemed at the Social Station in Hall D of NRG Center.
