After reviewing nearly 600 entries, H-E-B was thrilled to reveal the top 25 finalists in the search for their next “Texas Best” Primo Pick. Contest entries came from around the state after the Quest for Texas Best competition launched in February. The finalists included six product makers from the Houston area; five from the San Antonio area; four from the Dallas area; two each from Austin, the Rio Grande Valley and Waco; and one each from Beaumont, Victoria, Willis and Waxahachie. The deciding judging round in the Quest for Texas Best statewide competition was held August 19 and 20 at Houston Food Bank.

The six finalists from the Houston area included:

• Michael Briggs’ Briggs True line of sauces and rubs from Houston, TX
• Chef DeeDee Coleman’s DEElicious Red Velvet Waffle Batter from Houston, TX
• George and Rubie Huerta’s Huerta’s Texas Gumbo from Houston, TX
• Dwayne LeJune’s Armadillo Eggs from Western Grillers from Friendswood, TX
• Brenda Powell’s Savannah Rose Punch from Humble, TX
• Nolan Stillwell’s Sweet Heat Jam Company from Katy, TX

In the end, four winners received cash prizes and will receive consideration for coveted space on H-E-B shelves in 2015. And here are the winners in the Quest For Texas Best:

Grand Prize ($25,000 and placement as a ‘Texas Best’ Primo Pick):
Nanette Watson’s Frio Farm (Concan), Flavored Vanilla Extracts

First Place ($20,000):
Hector Alba’s MaxFrut (Arlington), Frozen Whole Fruit Bars

Second Place ($15,000):
Pilar Gonzalez’s Habibi Gourmet (Mission), DIP-IT

Third Place ($10,000):
Sara Vela’s Vela Farms (Victoria), Texas Sweet Tea Jelly
