Houston has been on fire this year with opening new restaurants and bars, with many becoming instant stars and crowd favorites. One end of the year newcomer that is combining both in an “oh so sexy” way is Tarakaan Houston. Housed in a 1920’s building off Main St. in Midtown, this newcomer is bringing their A game. Chef Micah Rideout has created a menu that boasts extensive and creative Pan-Asian fare. The bar program offers up delicious Asian influenced cocktails, sake cocktails, and a fabulous wine selection!
During a recent visit I got to enjoy dinner and the bar after it turned into more of a lounge/club scene. I must say that I would go during the week, Monday-Thursday, and make reservations to be seated at a table for a more traditional meal. I sat at the bar and got appetizers, shareable plates, and entrees, but as it got later it became very difficult to enjoy my meal while people were hanging over my back trying to order drinks from the bar. So if seated at the bar or on the sofas, keep it cute with just appetizers and drinks! A few favorites from the night were the Short Rib Dumplings (coriander braised short ribs), Hamachi Tiradito (passion fruit, shallots, and chili oil) and the Crab Nasi Gorang (Indonesian fried rice and jumbo lump crab).
In addition to these menu items, I must admit this place is lots of fun. The bar, the DJ with a live saxophonist, and the vibe all come together to create quite the experience; and this will be where Tarakaan will win! The club-like scene and the crowd are mucho caliente baby – yes I’m using Spanish words to describe the atmosphere at a Pan-Asian themed lounge! It models its lounge concepts after Buddha-Bar in Paris, Buddakan in Manhattan, and TAO in Las Vegas.
If you like your food the same way you like your fun and after hours adventures, then Tarakaan Houston is your new go to spot…think crazy, sexy, cool!
