For years I have heard friends and fellow breakfast lover’s talk of the great brunch Tiny Boxwood’s is serving up in River Oaks. So, the only thing left for me to do was to try it out for myself, right? Well, it wasn’t that simple. I will admit that the lack of a reservation system or any process that would guarantee me a confirmed seat and/or time was the reason my dates were pushed back almost a year. Luckily, I was in the area early one Saturday morning and I could no longer make excuses for not checking this place out.
Brunch at Tiny Boxwood’s is counter service where you order your meal, are given a number, and your food is brought to your table. Truth be told, the anxiety of not ordering fast enough to get one of those prime seats on the patio was ever present. To minimize this feeling, I rushed to the black chalkboard hoping to find what I wanted quick, fast, and in a hurry. My eyes browsed the menu from top to bottom and then from left to right…I didn’t want to miss a thing. Luckily, the menu is short and gets right to the point; which I loved.
The Saturday and Sunday brunch menu vary only slightly, and you don’t miss their top items like the House Migas (scrambled eggs with cheese, potatoes, sausage, tortilla strips and salsa) or their Mother’s Breakfast (served with house ground sausage, eggs, biscuits and strawberry jam) regardless of which day you choose. However, if you opt for a Sunday visit, you will have the opportunity to partake in the breakfast “pizzas” that come in options such as bacon, potato, or steak.
The pastries and house made juices & cocktails help to round out what is already a great brunch offering. I was tempted to grab a croissant, chocolate chip cookie, and that other sweet yummy looking thing from the counter, but I controlled my urge. We did, however, order the Julia Sunrise and the Orange Julia which are both great orange juice concoctions.
Tiny Boxwood’s is situated in such a beautiful setting, with a patio aligned right on the backside of the garden and plant store. If I had more time, I could just stay and sip on Cappuccinos all day, but I live in the real world…bummer. Tiny Boxwood’s is definitely a must-try, must-have, and must-do; even if you just drop by for the chocolate chip cookies or to enjoy a little down time paired with their deliciously fresh lemonade.
Saturday and Sunday brunch are served from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and 9 a.m.-2 p.m., respectively.
