Dinner and a movie have certainly gotten an upgrade over the last few decades. For the Baby-Boomers, it probably meant hitting a drive-in with a bucket of chicken. Then, there was the period of having dinner before the movies. Soon to follow were the theaters that offered complete meals while enjoying a movie. Now we’ve got Straits Houston in City Centre that is providing yet another option; this one is strictly for the grown and sexy…dinner, movie, and cocktails!

It’s their Moonlight Cinema Series, which takes place on the first Thursday of every month, starting at 10 p.m. We decided to check it out this month so we could catch the movie ELF, and try out Chef John Sikhattana’s newly-launched Late Night Menu featuring Thai street food. Urban Girl and Urban Guy (her hubby) arrived with blanket in tow, because it happened to occur during one of the few cold nights in our city. I, on the other hand, decided to be a soldier and ride it out with just an over-sized sweater – by the end of the night I realized this was just flat out foolish! We were pleasantly surprised given all the happenings in City Centre, and with this event being outside in the patio area, that there were no distractions. We could hear the film just fine and the staff was available to take care of all our food and drink needs. In true Urban Swank style we wasted no time getting it started. We selected…

Lychee Martini (Grey Goose Vodka, Soho Lychee Liquor, fresh lychee, served up with a fresh lychee garnish), Ginger Pear Drop (Grey Goose La Poire Vodka, Canton Ginger Liqueur, house infused ginger syrup, fresh sweet & sour served in a sugar rimmed glass), Chicken Lollipops (with Kung Pao Chili Glaze), Satay Sticks Chicken w/Spicy Peanut Sauce (grilled skewers of chicken or beef served with a spicy peanut sauce), Grilled Bali Style Spare Ribs, (Bali style five spice barbeque pork ribs), and Straits Singapore Chili Grilled Oysters. Items on the late night menu are $5 and are available from 10pm to close, Thursdays to Saturdays.

Their cocktails are always delicious, and the signature cocktails provide something for everyone. The Ginger Pear Drop is one of my favorites; even though it’s on the sweeter side. I love the balance between all the favors, and the fresh ginger gives it just the right kick. The late night bites were on point, and the Chicken Lollipops and Bali Spare Ribs were the first things to disappear from our plates. Let’s not forget about the caramel popcorn…it was memorable to say the least.

If you find yourself wanting to do dinner and a movie with a twist, a guaranteed second date event, or just find yourself in City Centre the first Thursday of the month – you should definitely give it a try.
