Recently, we attended All Thing Baking 2012, which was held right here in Houston. This is an industry event that offers educational sessions, demonstrations, and all things baking for retail culinary professionals. You could view a demonstration on “Airbrushing with Colored Cocoa Butter”, attend an educational seminar on “Improving Efficiency in Your Bakery”, take part in interactive sessions on “Bling, Bows, and Fantasy Flowers”, or get your hands dirty in a hands-on session like “Airbrushing”. This was the place to be if you were looking for the latest trends and/or wanted to take your culinary retail business to the next level.
We loved the fact that they had an exhibit area and competition floor; what would a baking event be without a little friendly competition, right. Some bakers competed in the “12th Annual RBA Pillsbury Bakers Plus Grand Champion Creative Decorating Competition” where they could showcase their best cake decorating skills in the areas of Flowers and Sprays, Wedding Cakes, Rolled Fondant, Custom Design Cakes, or Sculpted Cakes. Those opting to compete on a less grand scale could enter their goodies in the “Cake & Baked Foods Extravaganza”. You just had to get creative and bring your A game to win the $250 cash prize. The categories included Buttercream Sculpted Cakes, Kolache, Rosca de Reyes, and Cupcakes.
On the last day of the event, baking tours were offered so attendees could observe their techniques first hand. Ooh La La Dessert Boutique, Cakes By Gina, Dessert Gallery, Mabis Patisserie, El Bolillo Bakery, Three Brothers Bakery, Michael’s Cookie Jar, Slow Dough Bread Company, Kegg’s Candy, and Whole Foods Bakery were some of Houston’s top bakeries that took part in the tours.
Here are a few pictures from the exhibitors and some snap shots from the cake decorators in action!
