You know you need to clam down when you jump up and yell, "Stop, drop, and roll", because you are so excited! And then realize, that's a safety technique you follow in case you are on fire! Okay let's try this again...Whoo hoo, Houston Restaurant Weeks starts next week and we are so PUMPED! Each year it undoubtedly gets bigger and better with 2017 being no exception. This culinary event allows you to dine out and do good for the entire month of August (and through September 4th), with the proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank.
Another cool fact about Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW) is it gives people the opportunity to try a new restaurant at a reduced cost; and gives the restaurants the opportunity to try new menu items. Each year we look at the list and share with you the places we like the most, the ones with the best deals, and so forth. This year we’ve decided to share the ones that are extra special and the reason why.
One-half of the dual restaurant concept, Pass & Provisions, is finally making an appearance in Houston Restaurant Weeks! We have been fans of both Provisions (and of course, Pass) for several years and we are looking forward to the menu that Chef Terrence Gallivan and Seth Siegel-Gardner have created for the cause. Serving up a similar menu for both lunch and dinner, we definitely have our eye on the Spicy Tuna (Avocado) Toast and Green Pea Cavatappi. Provisions will need to be on your list for more reasons than one!
Yes, you saw that right! You’ll get to enjoy a delicious HRW menu at Main Course Cooking School! What makes this experience so cool is that you will actually be preparing your own meal and you’ll get to reap the benefits of all your hard work (wink). There will be three menus available each night so you can choose from three 3-course meals with mouth-watering entrees like their Sous Vide Pan Seared Sirloin Filet, Southern Shrimp & Grits, or the Reverse Seared Pan Fried Flat Iron Steak & Shrimp (betcha can’t say that fast five times).
When you get the chance to enjoy a fantastic dinner AND receive a special gift just because you are so freakin’ awesome, that is what we call “sweetening the deal”! After you’ve enjoyed your $35 3-course dinner of Crab Hushpuppies, Pork & Greens, and a Birthday Cake for dessert (that’s just what we would order, no pressure), General Public will gift each diner with a gift card for 1/2 hour (value up to $22) of bowling at Bowl & Barrel which is located next door!
Dinner and a movie just got a whole lot cooler! Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (the Mason Park location) has not only created a great HRW menu for only $20 per person, but you also get a free movie for a return visit! The 3-course menu offers goods like Truffle Parmesan Buttered Popcorn, Big Stack Burger, and Adult Milkshakes.
Another newcomer is also one of our personal faves! If you’ve never tried Coltivare now is the time, and we suggest you just go ahead and block out two dates because you will love it. Once you look at the menu you will also want to go again because it is packed with exceptional options. Here are a few suggestions by course…
1st course– Chicken wings, Chiles, Lemon Verbena, Basil or Grilled Figs, Prosciutto, PT.Reyes Blue, Balsamic
2nd Course– Crab Ravioli, Ricotta Gnocchi, Spaghetti
3rd Course– Wood Roasted Pear Crostada
We were over the moon when we found out that Pappas Bros Steakhouse was back! It’s been several years since they’ve taken part in HRW, and we are super glad to see them on the list. This is easily one of our top picks and if you are a steak lover it should be yours too. The thing about them is no matter what the event, Mother’s Day, Easter, HRW – the experience (level of service to food) is going to ALWAYS be top level! We are currently looking on the calendar for which day[s] we will go and enjoy the Maine Lobster or Dry Aged Prime New York Strip.
Have you ever had dinner at Common Bond? Don’t worry no one has and that makes their HRW appearance even sweeter! Get ready because we are about to experience Common Bond after dark as they add dinner service for Houston Restaurant Weeks. A few dishes that caught our eye are the Lemon Dijon and Bacon Roasted Oysters, Sweet Corn Bisque, and Scallops St. Jacques. We must admit there was a happy dance and a fist bump when we saw this menu!
This dining destination that normally serves a wonderful nine to eighteen-course tasting menu is another newcomer to HRW. And because of the special service and care the restaurant is accustomed to providing, the HRW menu will only be available at 7 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with one seating per night, and reservations are required. We are just as excited to experience Eculent as we are about their HRW menu. To be honest, we were sold when we saw the 44 Farms NY strip as a main course!
