This past weekend saw Fashion Houston come to a close. This week of fashion shows and events brought some topnotch designers to Houston as they showcased their latest collections. New York based designer, Zachary Prell presented his collection on Friday night and he definitely had quite a few looks that I could picture myself wearing. After his show I was able to chat with him about his inspiration, background, and collection. Check it out!

DM: What was your inspiration behind getting into designing menswear?

ZP: I worked on Wall Street for a number of years prior to launching and was pretty much a frustrated consumer. I was a fairly slim guy wearing button downs that were too boxy and didn’t fit well, and I thought there had to be a better way. So I went back to business school in 2005 at Columbia. While my peers were trying to get jobs in finance and other fields, I was trying to learn how to make clothes from scratch. I launched the company out of my apartment in 2006. Sports shirts are really the hallmark of our brand but we have been able to grow and expand from there.

ZP: The key to our brand is versatility. Our DNA is: fit, versatility, and smart detailing in everything that we make. I want guys to be able to look great day to evening and make clothes that fit their busy lifestyle. I really wanted to make products that people love to put on.

DM: What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into fashion/this career?

ZP: You really have to LOVE what you do and find something that you are passionate about. Stick with it! Entrepreneurship…you really have to jump in it with both feet; don’t do it halfhearted. Also, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something! If you have a dream, go for it. You should be doing what makes you happy everyday.

DM: Why Houston? What do you think about the fashion scene in Houston?

ZP: I felt honored to be invited to be a part of Fashion Houston. My line is in the Norddstrom and Neiman Marcus here in town so Houston definitely has a spot in my heart. Seeing Houston put forth the effort makes me want to support. I like to name the shirts after influential people, sales associates, friends etc. I actually have a shirt named after Ricci Fuller, the manager of the men’s sportswear department at the Neiman Marcus here in Houston.

DM: What’s one of your favorite pieces from your collection?

ZP: I love the Thompson leather jacket. It’s great for travel, really light, versatile, and easy. For Fall, I like the zip up sweater and really all of our sports shirts. I really enjoy seeing others excited about the brand.

DM: What’s next for your brand?

ZP: We have a lot of projects in the works but we are really working on expanding and rounding out the collection. Perhaps some non-denim bottoms will be next! I’ll keep you updated. Haha.

His love and passion for producing great menswear is clearly seen in his products and in conversation with him. I was very excited to see a menswear designer showcase during Fashion Houston. Zachary Prell has a collection that is very versatile, well fitting, and looks great. For me, having clothing that transitions well from day to evening/night is a necessity since I’m usually on the move. I must say that Zachary Prell has effortlessly nailed this concept, and I’m a fan!

It was a pleasure chatting with Zachary Prell and I look forward to seeing more of what you have to offer in the future!
