Not everyone lotions their entire body every single day of the week, but when you suffer from chronic (and uncomfortably) dry skin you may not always have a choice in the matter. From as far back as I can remember, I have drenched my entire bod in some form of body lotion, oil, or cream. Whether I'm choosing a lighter cream for warmer days, going heavier after long baths, or even using some to ensure the perfect night's sleep, I kinda have this body lotion thing down.
Knowing that every type of lotion is not ideal for every day or every situation, I wanted to share the seven body lotions that fulfill all of my skins needs – and that may do the same for you!
To Keep My Body Tight
I hadn’t fallen all the way for the hype, but when the summertime rolled around I had to purchase a jar of Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. I wanted to see what all the buzz was about for myself. Containing one of the most potent forms of caffeine on the planet, guaraná (think firming, smoothing, and tightening), the cream also blends mica (for an added glow), and other nourishing ingredients like upuaçu butter (restores the skin’s natural moisture) and açaí (an antioxidant). The beautiful airy pudding-like body cream allows for fast absorption and it smells wonderful, which is due to the coconut oil and pistachio caramel. I’ve been using it for a few months now focusing on my thighs, belly, and bum and I am loving it!
The Perfect After Bath Oil
I’m typically the most dry after I shower and my infatuation with long and steamy hot baths doesn’t help in my dry skin dilemma. Well here comes Fig + Yarrow Bath + Body Oil in Meadow to save the day. This is a must have if I spend a little more time than normal in the bathtub. It contains certified oragnix oils (olive, grapeseed, pumpkin, and sweet almond) blended with lavender. It is super nourishing for the skin and offers a deep hydration that the body needs every now and then. I even add a splash to my bath for a aromatherapeutic experience.
For a Good Night’s Sleep
I’m not lying when I tell you they can’t keep this stuff on the shelves! If you have not tried Lush’s Sleepy Body Lotion, then you are really missing out on some good sleep – and a fantastic lotion. The ingredient list goes on and on and includes some heavy hitters like oatmeal, glycerin, almond oil, cocoa butter, tonka, and lavender. And not only does the lotion result in a sleep-filled night, but it instantly hydrates and stays put. This purple lotion is included in my nightly regime and my skin thanks me daily for it.
When I Don’t Want To Be Weighed Down
Because my skin is a bit drier than most, I tend to purchase heavier creams and lotions. But there are times when I opt for something lighter, especially on warmers days. If your lotion is heavy and does not absorb well, that can cause sweating which is not a good look. Philosophy Pure Grace Body Lotion is the perfect light-weight alternative. It has a light-perfume scent, contains shea butter, antioxidants, and natural oils, and is just heavy enough to hydrate without needing to apply more minutes later.
The Holy Grail of Body Butters
My all day, any day, that I wear almost all the time is the Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. I have way too many great things to say about this body cream! The whipped texture makes for a fairly light and quick application and it is filled with a ton of good stuff. The butter contains shea butter, squalane, jojoba butter and beta carotene to protect and soften your skin and I love that it’s not too oily or greasy. I can apply this butter in the beginning of the day and it will last until my evening shower. And it really smells like milk and honey!
Eyes Hands Only
Do you keep a small tube of lotion in your purse to moisturize your hands throughout the day? I certainly do. That cheap stuff they keep in public restrooms (if they offer any at all) just doesn’t work for me. I need something that is thick to protect and keep my hands from feeling dry all day. is my go to and the fact that it is enriched with 20% organic Shea Butter makes it extremely creamy. Plus the added coconut oil, honey, almond, and marshmallow root extracts leaves my hands soft and smooth with no oily traces.
An All-Over Body Melt
I came across Kuhdoo at a pop up event in Houston earlier this year. Located in Austin, this husband and wife team (the Mangums) make all of their products themselves. They create soaps, hand washes, candles, lip balms, and much more, but their body butters is what I feel hard for. The small-batch, handcrafted body butters come in small jars and are available in Almond, Bluebonnet, Natural, Lavender and Vanillas Bean (contains whipped shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado oil, almond oil and Vitamin E). Don’t let the small jar fool ya – this butter goes a long way and literally melts as soon as it hits your skin.
