Skin is the body’s largest organ, and we must protect it at all costs. November marks National Healthy Skin Month, a public health and awareness campaign that aims to raise awareness on the importance of having healthy skin.

Here are my holy grail secrets to healthy, glowing skin from head to toe.

  1. Know your skin type

All skincare routines are not created equal, so knowing how your skin reacts in different environments and with different ingredients is the best way to arm yourself against breakouts and irritation. Key indicators for skin type include the amount of T-zone oil you produce, the size of your pores, and evenness of skin tone. Still not 100% sure of your skin type? The blot test is a good place to start in determining whether your skin is normal, dry, oily, or combination.

  1. Be nice to your skin

The hustle and bustle of everyday life make it hard to show your skin the TLC it really needs. However, there are simple changes you can make today that will visibly improve the quality of your skin. Try a delicate touch, and pat your body dry instead of rubbing it with a towel after showering to reduce irritation and body acne caused by the towel pulling at your skin.

Other ways to treat your skin more delicately include exfoliating before hair removal, and ditching fruity and floral soaps and lotions (which sensitize all skin types) for more natural scents with less synthetic fragrances.

  1. Practice healthy habits

No expensive products or techniques will help you achieve healthy skin if you are not practicing healthy habits.

So here are some friendly reminders to always:

  • Maintain a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Drink water and exercise to detox the body of impurities.
  • Always use sunscreen, no matter your skin tone!
  • Keep stress levels low, and get 7-8 hours of beauty rest a night.

Seems pretty basic, but many overlook the power in following these simple steps.  Don’t be like those people!

  1. The art of “dry-brushing

Want to reduce the appearance of cellulite, unclog pores, and get more glowing skin all over without even leaving the house? Dry brushing is the natural remedy you didn’t know existed. Right before you shower, take a soft bristle body brush and gently brush skin upwards, in long strokes, towards your heart. Start with your feet and work your all the way up to your neck, always brushing in the direction of your heart. Do yourself a favor and tack on the extra 2 minutes it takes to include this technique in your daily routine if nothing else – you won’t regret it.

You’re fierce, you’re fabulous, but sometimes you have one too many at happy hour or eat greasy Chinese food twice in a week. Don’t fret; a detox is like hitting the reset button on your overworked skin to reveal a more vibrant you.
